The Three Main Symptoms For TMJ

TMJ, found on each side of the jaw, connects the lower jaw to the skull. TMJ moves in a rotating action and gliding action. Rotating action is related to the mouth's opening and closing action while the gliding action permits the mouth to open broader. The coordination of these two actions is necessary for talking, chewing and yawning.

Temporomandibular joint or TMJ syndrome or disorder is a medical problem in the joint. Patients experience pain in the neck, head, face and ears. Patients might encounter problems in biting, popping sounds in biting, difficulty to open the jaw, and jaw lock.

TMJ syndrome is usually caused by teeth grinding and clenching, joint degeneration, and rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation of the joints may also be caused by habits of gum chewing, fingernail biting, dental problems, misalignment of the teeth, and previous history of fractures in the jaw. Stress and occupational tasks via the head and shoulders are likewise considered associated causes of TMJ. Likewise, the dislocation of the disc that performs as a cushion connecting the ball and the socket could cause the disorder.

Symptoms for TMJ include the following signs:

Headache, listed as one of the most universal symptoms for TMJ, is experienced by about 80% of patients with TMJ. Headache becomes worse when the individual tries to open and close the jaws. Headache is triggered when something very cold is sensed by the jaw like cold drinks, cold weather and cold air. Headache can augment muscle contraction in addition to facial muscle pains.

Ear pains are not all caused by infections. As one of the symptoms for TMJ, individuals who encounter frequent or recurring ear pain in the front of the ear or just below the ear must visit the doctor for diagnosis. About 50% of patients experience this symptom among the other symptoms for TMJ.

Do you hear popping sounds, grinding sounds and crunching sounds? As one age, the jaw experiences wear and tear. If you have the habits of teeth clenching and grinding or is already in the old age, consider calling for an appointment with a doctor.

What Exactly Is Health?

If you were to ask the World Health Organization (WHO), their definition would go something like this: Optimum mental, physical, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or injury.

(Personally, I believe spiritual well-being is just as important as the other three areas, but that's another discussion for another time.)

So what the WHO definition is saying, is that you can only experience true, robust health when your life is working on all levels. And if even one of those three aspects aren't balanced, your health will be diminished.

However, I think that the WHO definition has a root flaw in it, in that it states that good health is based upon the absences of disease or injury. Just because you didn't have a disease or an injury at the moment, would that guarantee that you're healthy?

Couldn't you be symptom-free yet suffer from lack of nutrition and or from inadequate physical or mental exercise? We have to look a little deeper than the WHO definition to find the real answer...

Quantum physicists tell us that everything can be broken down to energy. In fact, Einstein's famous equation E = MC 2 proved it. It showed that even material things were just dense forms of energy.

Your 'Life Force' if you will, is a special form of energy and data. It lives in your brain. We know this because we can measure it with an EEG machine. For example, if we can detect brain activity in a comatose person, there is still someone alive in there.

Conversely, if we have someone on feeding tubes and respirators, but there is no brain activity, Elvis has left the building.

Our Life Force must travel down from the brain and out through the rest of the nervous system to reach every cell in your body in order to tell them how to recreate themselves. That's called life!

When 100% of your Life Force is expressing itself, your body is 'at ease' - able to function normally, adapt to its environment, and ward off microscopic invaders. That is the real definition of health. So it's not based upon the absence of anything but is instead based upon the maximum presence of your Life Force.

If the flow of your Life Force is impeded in any way, your body will not be at ease, it will be in a state of 'dis-ease.' And the dangerous part of that, is that many times that impedance does not show up with a symptom in the beginning.

But, haven't we all been taught that being healthy meant that you did not have any symptoms? Consider this. If you feel good but you have undiagnosed heart disease or cancer, are you healthy? Of course not. You're SICK!

On the other hand, if you have eaten food that has gone bad, and within a little while that same food is uncontrollably and violently leaving your body, you may feel horrible, but your body is actually engaged in a healthy response by getting the poison out of it.

So how you feel is not necessarily a good indicator of how healthy you are. However, symptoms do let you know that something isn't working right in that body of yours, and that it's time to find out why your body is not at ease - why a portion of your Life Force is not getting through.

Concerning your health, this is the bottom line: The only time that you lose your health is when your body is robbed of its vitality, robbed of the living energy that keeps you alive. And that only happens when something is interfering with the expression of your life.

Your brain-body connection must be restored, and that is best accomplished by a principled chiropractor. A principled chiropractor is one who acknowledges the founding chiropractic principle that states that the nervous system is the master control system of the body. And he or she is dedicated to keeping that system free from all hindrances.

How Demystifying Cholesterol?

There is perhaps no substance in the human body which has caused our society more recent concern than cholesterol. We are bombarded almost daily with advertising that urges us to "talk to your doctor" about how to lower the "bad" cholesterol that allegedly clogs our cardiovascular systems. While conferring with your health care practitioner is certainly advisable when dealing with this issue, it is imperative that we do so armed with accurate information. Some of this information is not well-known and, therefore, quite surprising.

At the outset, it should be understood that cholesterol is a necessary substance in our bodies. First and foremost, cholesterol constitutes the mechanism which transports fats and proteins (therefore, the name "lipoprotein") to and from our cellular structure. The reason that we have both low and high density types (i.e., LDL and HDL) is that they each perform different functions. LDL is a more loosely bound substance meant to bring fats and proteins TO the cells for use there, while HDL has a tighter chemical bond meant to RETURN them to the liver for processing. So it is important to have adequate amounts of both types for our bodies to operate properly.

Additionally, cholesterol is the primary raw material comprising all of the steroid based hormones in the body. Cortisol, DHEA, testosterone, progesterone and the estrogen compounds all derive from cholesterol. Therefore, too low a cholesterol value runs the risk of depriving our bodies of the material we need to synthesize these important hormones. The relationship of these hormones is quite complicated and interdependent, but all depend on adequate cholesterol to properly perform their functions.

Unfortunately, there are several myths that have grown up around the subject of cholesterol over the years, most of them having to do with the money to be made by promoting anti-cholesterol drugs. The first is that the cholesterol content of food has a direct impact on our serum cholesterol levels. There are many studies which debunk this "urban health legend," but the most compelling is the Framingham Heart Study. This decades-long, ongoing study by Boston University Medical School discovered NO connection between the cholesterol content of food and serum cholesterol levels. In fact, many people who eat healthful quantities of what conventional wisdom would call "bad" foods (i.e., foods high in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids) have lower cholesterol than those who do not.

The second myth is that high cholesterol alone is responsible for cardiovascular disease. Thanks to pioneering research conducted at facilities such as the Cooper Aerobics Institute in Dallas, we now know that cholesterol in and of itself is not the primary culprit in the onset of cardiovascular disease; inflammation of the blood vessels is. This inflammation, in turn, is caused by a number of factors, including stress, over exercise and consumption of processed foods which all set up an inflammatory process in the body. This has caused a paradigm shift within the scientific community toward an "inflammatory model" and away from the old "congestive model" to explain the processes of cardiovascular disease.

Acupuncture Can Be Used to Enhance Healthy Living

Healthy living comes with some basic mantras like "eat fruits and vegetables," "don't smoke," and "get some exercise." It can even come with some suggestions like "take a yoga class" and "get acupuncture." It's not rocket science. In fact, it's far from rocket science, which is probably often performed in a sedentary manner by a concentrating, stressed-out scientist, alone in his lab, sitting on a stool, with quick and unhealthy processed snacks within reach.

Healthy living is basic science. Eating is pretty basic. What should we eat and drink? Green tea is good. It contains phenols, which cleanse the liver. Artichokes are excellent - they can decrease cholesterol levels. Walnuts, chestnuts, and almonds also fight cholesterol. Strawberries have antioxidants. Fish have essential oils. Celery has fiber. Soy milk is a high-calcium, high-protein replacement for cow's milk, which often contains antibiotics and hormones. Plus, it's vegan, so it's harvested without animal use and misuse. Avoid red meat, saturated fats, processed foods and excessive refined sugar. Healthy food is kind of a no-brainer. So is not smoking. Smoking killed 2.5 million Americans in 2010 - on average, each person lived 22 years short of their life expectancy. Smoking is a major cause of coronary artery disease, cancer, and emphysema. Cigarette smoke contains 4,000 chemicals, many of them highly toxic. Secondhand smoke causes asthma and leukemia in children. Smoking is slowly becoming outlawed in more public places, beaches, college campuses, restaurants and pubs. The focus on the rights of the non-smoker, over a smoker's right to smoke, is indicative of a new society that is more healthfully-minded.

Exercise is also finding its place in today's society with an increasing number of companies offering on-site gyms to their employees, desks with built-in stationary bicycles, dedicated biking and jogging lanes on many streets, and health plans with weight-loss incentives. Exercise improves sleep, mitigates depression, staves off diabetes and heart disease, improves blood circulation and respiratory function, and increases agility, strength and flexibility. What's not to love? Exercise is a walk in the park, if you walk just a little bit briskly. To get the health benefits of exercise, you don't, and in fact shouldn't, exercise excessively. There are other ways to improve or maintain your physical health. Acupuncture is a growing trend that is believed to stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms. Many practitioners believe that acupuncture relieves an imbalance of yin and yang energy. The trained application of needles inserted into the body's meridians, which are the fourteen channels though which energy flows, opens blockages and lets the energy flow freely and get back in balance. Patients report relief from pain, stress and illness after an acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture may also strategically wake up an immune system to battle illnesses. The needles can essentially direct the body's natural defenses to pay attention to an ailing system. Massage and yoga are also gaining a following as they become increasingly used for health, therapy, stress relief, and realignment of the spine. Herbal supplements may have their place in healthful practices, but be cautious about what you put in your mouth, and do your homework with your doctor, not just on the Internet. Be well. And have a glad of red wine - it's good for the heart.

How Take Advantage of Holistic Health Treatments?

It is important that you know there are options for overcoming health challenges. Choosing a doctor is hard enough, let alone choosing your form of treatment. Whether you are looking to maintain your already healthy lifestyle or you are "aching" to cure a chronic pain, holistic treatment centers can help you naturally achieve your health goals. From chiropractors to acupuncture specials, taking the natural route is always an option patients are encouraged to consider.

Chiropractors can help naturally treat a number of different bodily discomforts. People normally seek chiropractic care when they have migraines or headaches, pain in the neck, arm(s), or lower back, sports injuries, carpel tunnel or muscle pains. Depending on each patient's case, visits can be weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Chiropractic treatment is the manipulation and adjustment of the musculoskeletal system. This affects the nervous system and is a safe and effective treatment style. Chiropractors go through years of specific training on clinical education, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, pathology, and nutrition.

Originating in China nearly 2,500 years ago, acupuncture is another popular holistic treatment. Acupuncture gives attention to energy (also referred to as "qi") that runs through energy pathways (also referred to as "meridians") in the body. Any type of disturbance of qi in the meridians will offset your body's balance. That offset of balance is what triggers the discomforts in the body that send patient's seeking professional care from their primary physician. By placing very fine needles along the necessary meridians, acupuncture can help improve migraines and headaches, anxiety, pain in the lower back, digestive problems, acute and chronic pain, and more. Many people also seek out acupuncturists to help them quit smoking! Yes the needles can be an intimidating thought, especially if you have a fear of needles. However, do not let those thoughts and fears take over! Acupuncture should NOT hurt you and you shouldn't feel any pain from the treatment, only relief. Sessions last approximately 15-30 minutes. The holistic center you go to for treatment can help further explain and prepare you for your visit.
